In This Guide
For the millions of Indians living abroad, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra holds a special significance — it is often a lifelong spiritual goal, a desire to reconnect with their roots, or the fulfilment of a vow made to Lord Shiva. Yet planning this sacred journey from the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, or the UAE adds a layer of complexity that many NRIs find daunting.
Where do you join the yatra? Which route is best given limited annual leave? What permits do you need? Can you use an OCI card? This guide answers every question an NRI needs to plan their Kailash Yatra in 2026.
Can NRIs Do the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?
Absolutely — and thousands of NRIs do it every year. NRIs holding an Indian passport can join any Kailash Yatra route exactly as a resident Indian would. NRIs holding OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cards or who have taken foreign citizenship should confirm current eligibility with their chosen operator, as permit rules for non-Indian-passport holders can vary and change.
For NRIs who cannot travel to Tibet due to permit issues, or who simply want a shorter journey, the Kailash Aerial Darshan requires no passport or permit at all and can be completed in a single day.
Which Route Is Best for NRIs?
Helicopter Yatra ex Lucknow (Recommended for most NRIs)
This is the most popular choice for NRIs for good reason:
- Total duration is just 9–11 days — manageable within most annual leave entitlements
- The joining point is Lucknow, India — easy to reach via Delhi from any international flight
- Includes the full Kailash Parikrama and holy dip in Lake Mansarovar
- Least amount of overland travel through remote terrain
Suggested NRI travel plan: Fly to Delhi (or Mumbai) → overnight in Delhi → fly to Lucknow → join group → 9-day yatra → return to Lucknow → fly home. Total trip from UK/USA: approximately 13–15 days including travel days.
NRI Travel Tip
Plan to arrive in Lucknow the evening before group departure. Nila Voyages can arrange airport transfers and overnight hotel in Lucknow.
Overland Yatra via Kathmandu
The traditional and most scenic route, ideal if you have more time or want to experience Kathmandu and the Tibetan plateau:
- Duration: 13–15 days (plus international travel)
- Joining point: Kathmandu — reachable with direct flights from many international cities
- More immersive: passes through Lhasa, Shigatse, and the Tibetan plateau
- Lower cost than the helicopter route
Kailash Aerial Darshan
For NRIs who:
- Are visiting India for a short trip and want to include Kailash darshan
- Are accompanying elderly parents or relatives with health limitations
- Have already done the full yatra and wish to bring family members who cannot trek
- Want a 1-day pilgrimage experience without permits or passports
Permit Requirements for NRIs
Indian passport holders
The process is identical to resident Indians. Your operator applies for the Tibet Group Permit on your behalf. You will need to provide:
- Valid Indian passport (minimum 6 months validity beyond yatra dates)
- Recent passport-size photographs
- Medical fitness certificate
- Completed application form provided by operator
OCI card holders or foreign passport holders
Permit eligibility can vary. As of 2026, those holding foreign nationality (including with OCI cards) should check with their operator about Tibet Group Permit eligibility. If ineligible for the overland/helicopter routes, the Kailash Aerial Darshan requires no such permits and is fully available.
Joining the Yatra from Abroad: Practical Logistics
Flying to Lucknow (for Helicopter Yatra)
There are no direct international flights to Lucknow from UK, USA, Canada, or Australia. Standard routing:
- From UK: London → Delhi (direct, ~9 hrs) → Delhi to Lucknow (1 hr domestic)
- From USA/Canada: New York/Toronto → Delhi (direct ~14 hrs) → Lucknow domestic
- From Australia: Sydney/Melbourne → Delhi via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur → Lucknow
- From UAE: Dubai → Lucknow (direct flights available, ~3 hrs)
Flying to Kathmandu (for Overland Yatra)
Kathmandu has direct flights from many international hubs including London, Dubai, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur, making it accessible without an India transit.
Medical and Fitness Considerations
Kailash Yatra involves high altitude (up to 5,630 metres at Dolma La pass on the parikrama). For NRIs accustomed to sea-level living, acclimatisation is especially important. We recommend:
- A medical check-up with your GP or cardiologist before booking
- Discussing Diamox (acetazolamide) for altitude sickness prevention with your doctor
- Beginning a physical fitness programme at least 3 months before departure
- Arriving a day early in Lucknow or Kathmandu to rest from long-haul travel before the yatra begins
Travel Insurance
NRIs must ensure their travel insurance policy covers:
- High-altitude trekking (above 4,000 metres)
- Emergency helicopter evacuation from Tibet
- Medical treatment in Nepal and Tibet
- Trip cancellation and curtailment
UK-based policies like the Post Office or Staysure, US-based World Nomads, and Australian policies through Cover-More all offer adventure/pilgrimage options. Read the fine print carefully.
