In This Guide
Mustang, located in north-central Nepal, is one of the most extraordinary travel destinations in the Himalayas. Often called the "Last Forbidden Kingdom," Mustang lies in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, giving it a stark, arid landscape that resembles the Tibetan Plateau. The region was an independent Buddhist kingdom until 1951 and was closed to outsiders until 1992.
Today, Mustang offers travellers a rare glimpse into a preserved Tibetan Buddhist culture, ancient monasteries, cave dwellings, and dramatic desert-like landscapes surrounded by 7,000-metre peaks.
Best Time to Visit
- Spring (March–May): The best season. Clear skies, moderate temperatures (10°C–20°C), and blooming wildflowers. The famous Tiji Festival usually takes place in May.
- Autumn (September–November): Second best season. Crystal-clear skies, excellent mountain views. Peak season for trekkers.
- Winter (December–February): Very cold. Temperatures drop to -15°C. Not recommended for treks.
Our Recommendation
April–May (for Tiji Festival) and September–October for trekking. May–September for Lower Mustang pilgrimages.
How to Reach Mustang
By Air (Most Common): Fly from Kathmandu to Pokhara (25 min), then take a 20-minute flight to Jomsom. From Jomsom, drive or trek to your destination.
By Road: Drive from Pokhara to Jomsom via Beni — a scenic 8–10 hour drive. The road continues to Kagbeni and Lo Manthang.
Upper Mustang Trek
