Best Time to Visit
Darjeeling is a year-round destination, but each season offers a different experience.
March–May
The most popular time. Rhododendrons and magnolias are in full bloom. Skies are clear, offering the best views of Kanchenjunga. Temperatures range from 10°C to 20°C. Ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
June–August
The monsoon season. Heavy rainfall can obscure views and make trekking trails slippery. However, the tea gardens are at their greenest. Budget travellers will find off-season deals.
September–November
Another excellent season. Post-monsoon clarity brings outstanding mountain views. Pleasant weather with temperatures between 8°C and 18°C. Peak tourist season.
December–February
Cold and crisp. Temperatures can drop to 2°C–8°C, with occasional snowfall. Clear winter skies offer stunning Himalayan views. Fewer crowds. Carry heavy woollens.

How to Reach Darjeeling
By Air
The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport (IXB), about 90 km from Darjeeling (3–3.5 hours by road). Bagdogra has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Guwahati. By Train
The nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), about 80 km from Darjeeling. NJP is well-connected to all major Indian cities. From NJP, you can either take a taxi (3 hours) or transfer to the iconic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (Toy Train) for an unforgettable 7-hour scenic ride to Darjeeling.
By Road
Darjeeling is well-connected by road to Siliguri (80 km), Gangtok (100 km), and Kalimpong (50 km). Regular state and private buses, as well as shared jeeps, operate from Siliguri and NJP. The winding mountain road offers stunning views of tea gardens and valleys.

1. Tiger Hill Sunrise
The single most iconic experience in Darjeeling. Wake up at 4 AM and head to Tiger Hill (2,590 m) to watch the sunrise paint the peaks of Kanchenjunga in shades of gold and orange. On exceptionally clear days, you can even see Mount Everest in the distance. The view of the Kanchenjunga massif at dawn is absolutely unforgettable.
2. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (Toy Train)
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Toy Train is a marvel of engineering. The 88-km journey from NJP to Darjeeling winds through 208 curves, 6 reverses, and 4 tunnels, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayas, tea gardens, and deep valleys. Even a short ride from Darjeeling to Ghoom (India's highest railway station at 2,258 m) is worth it.
3. Tea Garden Tours
No trip to Darjeeling is complete without visiting a tea estate. The Happy Valley Tea Estate, established in 1854, offers guided walks through the plantations and tea-tasting sessions. 4. Himalayan Mountaineering Institute & Zoo

Adjacent is the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, home to snow leopards, red pandas, Tibetan wolves, and Himalayan black bears.
5. Peace Pagoda
One of 80 peace pagodas worldwide built by the Japanese Buddhist organisation Nipponzan Myohoji. Located on Jalapahar Hill, it offers spectacular panoramic views of Darjeeling town and the snow-clad peaks. The four avatars of Buddha carved in stone are a highlight.
6. Mall Road & Chowrasta
The heart of Darjeeling town. Chowrasta (the Quadrilateral) is a pedestrian-only square where locals and tourists gather. Enjoy horse rides, shop for Tibetan handicrafts, woolens, and Darjeeling tea, or simply sit on a bench with a cup of steaming chai and watch the world go by.

Food & Local Specialties
Darjeeling's cuisine is a delightful blend of Bengali, Nepali, Tibetan, and Anglo-Indian influences. Must-try dishes include momo (steamed dumplings), thukpa (noodle soup), sel roti (Nepali rice donuts), and churpee (hard cheese made from yak milk). Darjeeling tea, of course, is a must — try it at the source.

Travel Tips from Our Team
- Book accommodation in advance during peak season (April–May, October–December). Darjeeling sees heavy tourist traffic and good hotels fill up quickly.
- Carry cash. Many local shops and restaurants do not accept cards or UPI.
- Dress in layers. Darjeeling weather changes rapidly — sunny one moment, foggy and cold the next. A light jacket is essential even in summer.
- Start Tiger Hill early. The queue for sunrise can be long. Leave by 4 AM to secure a good spot.
- Buy authentic Darjeeling tea. Buy from the Tea Box or directly from tea estates. Avoid cheap roadside "Darjeeling tea" — it is often a blend.
- Acclimatise. If you are arriving from the plains, take it easy on the first day. The altitude (2,045 m) can cause mild breathlessness.
